Bible Quotes

18 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard." 21 Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.
(Deuteronomy 21:18-21)

"He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.

(Proverbs 13:18)

He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.
(Proverbs 13:24)

(Proverbs 19:18)

Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
(Proverbs 22:15)

13Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. 14Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
(Proverbs 23:13,14)

The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
(Proverbs 29:15)

Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.
(Proverbs 29:17)

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. 2Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)  3That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. 4And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
(Ephesians 6:1-4)

The Bible and Correction

When is correction a helpful gift? When someone is compromising. "When Peter came to Antioch I had to oppose him publicly, speaking strongly against what he was doing for it was very wrong." Galatians 2:11, TLB.

Correction is helpful when it is motivated by love rather than condemnation. "I am not writing about these things to make you ashamed, but to warn and counsel you as beloved children." I Corinthians 4:14, TLB.

Correction is helpful for those who want to grow spiritually.  "Let God train you, for he is doing what any loving father does for his children. Whoever heard of a son who was never corrected?" Hebrews 12:7, TLB.

Scripture is also the source of correction for people's lives. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." II Timothy 3:16,17, NIV.

Correction

Correction, via the identical French from the Latin corrigĕre 'to make straight (again)', is an action to rectify, to make right a wrong. It may have the following meanings:
  • To set straight an error, clarify a misunderstanding, undo resulting damage; e.g. a correction (newspaper) in a newspaper is the posting of the notice of a mistake that appeared in a past issue of a newspaper
  • To rectify an illogical state, e.g. a market anomaly as in correction (stock market).
  • As a euphemism for punishment, of various kinds, mainly physical; in institutional terminology specifically used for imprisonment, e.g. correctional facility (prison) or corrections.9
