Inspirational Quotes from Famous People

Jealousy comes from self-love rather than from true love.

Like hatred, jealousy is forbidden by the laws of life because it is essentially destructive.
Alexis Carrel quotes

Jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire.
Solomon Ibn Gabirol ben Judah quotes (Spanish Jewish Leader, Poet and Philosopher, 1021-1058)

Jealousy is the greatest of all evils, and the one which arouses the least pity in the person who causes it.
François de la Rochefoucauld quotes (French classical author, leading exponent of the Maxime, 1613-1680)

O! beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.
William Shakespeare quotes (English Dramatist, Playwright and Poet, 1564-1616)

To cure jealousy is to see it for what it is, a dissatisfaction with self.
Joan Didion quotes (American Journalist and Novelist, b.1934)

Jealousy is the injured lover's hell.
John Milton quotes (English Poet, Historian and Scholar. Ranks second, only to Shakespeare, among English poets. 1608-1674)

It is not love that is blind, but jealousy.
Lawrence Durrell quotes

Jealousy would be far less torturous if we understood that love is a passion entirely unrelated to our merits.
Paul Eldridge quotes

A competent and self-confident person is incapable of jealousy in anything. Jealousy is invariably a symptom of neurotic insecurity.
Robert A. Heinlein quotes (American science-fiction Writer, 1907-1988)

Don't waste time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind.
Mary Schmich quotes

Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace.
Milan Kundera quotes (Czech Novelist, Playwright and Poet, b.1929)

The Bible and Jealousy

Personal insecurity can breed a host of jealous strife. Often times, we base our security on the opinion, affirmation, and acceptance of other people. When we feel rejected or unloved we become dangerously insecure leading us to perceive the strengths of other people as threats to our own well being.

Covetousness is a deep desire to obtain a possession of another person. This leads to aggressive jealousy that is often spoken against in the Bible. The Ten Commandments address the issue: "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor" (Exodus 20:17).

When we use the word “jealous,” we use it in a sense of being envious of someone who has something we do not have. This kind of jealousy is a sin and is not characteristic of a Christian; rather, it shows that we are still being controlled by our own desires (1 Corinthians 3:3). Galatians 5:26 says, “Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”

The Bible tells us that we are to have the perfect kind of love that God has for us. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). The more we focus on ourselves and our own desires, the less we are able to focus on God. When we harden our hearts to the truth, we cannot turn to Jesus and allow Him to heal us (Matthew 13:15). But when we allow the Holy Spirit to control us, He will produce in us the fruit of our salvation, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Being jealous indicates that we are not satisfied with what God has given us. The Bible tells us to be content with what we have, for God will never fail or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). In order to combat jealousy, we need to become more like Jesus and less like ourselves. We can get to know Him through Bible study, prayer, and fellowship with mature believers. As we learn how to serve others instead of ourselves, our hearts will begin to change. “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).5

The Song of Songs (Song of Solomon) 8:6, says "jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame." It would seem, then, that jealousy can be a dangerous thing. While it may cause harm to the object, it causes more harm to the one who harbours the feeling. You see, uncontrolled jealousy can cause us to destroy our own lives. If we give in to it we follow up with distrust, enmity, even hate. Uncontrolled jealousy is not a sign of love, but of selfishness.

Numbers 5:11-31 speaks of the law for the Jews concerning a method (possibly miraculous) to determine if a man's jealousy is justified. Essentially it says that if a man suspects that his wife is bearing another man's child he shall take her to the priest. They go through a ceremony that involves her drinking a sort of potion. If the child is someone else's the potion, or just the stress of the ceremony, will cause her to miscarry. However, if the child comes to full term she will be held guiltless; it is his child. Whether this was ever used or not is never indicated in scripture. It may have been enough of an incentive to make a woman admit her adultery just because of the oaths she was required to take. The only thing I think we can take from this passage is that there are times when a man may become jealous and suspicious. He should not let that jealousy fester in him, but may take certain legal action to determine her guilt or innocence. Perhaps the modern equivalent would be a dna test. However, one should be careful not to go to extremes on a whim, lest one drive his wife away.5,8,9
