Sermon on
I Believe in God
By Brian Pepper
A group of men were sailing the sea on a clear cloudless night.
After a long discussion they agreed that God does not exist.
At last, tiring of their talk, the one man who was a believer in God waved his hand toward the star-filled sky and said: "Gentlemen, your arguments are very clever, but who made all these?” There was a great silence. And no wonder, for they were gazing at the immensity of God’s handiwork in the sky.
The starry heavens above us tell us that there is a God.
All things have a beginning
Everything that is made has a maker. All things have a beginning, a creation. Take an object in your home, a chair for instance. Did this chair just happen by accident? Did it suddenly appear in your house? You say, no I bought it at a furniture shop." But where did the chair come from? You answer; a carpenter must have made it. Without a carpenter the chair would not be in existence. Likewise when you open your eyes and see the beauties of nature: the colourful scented flowers, the stately trees, the singing birds
you cannot deny that there is an all-powerful Maker.
There must be a Mastermind that made our world and the universe.
Did the Universe Happen by Chance?
Could the world have just happened? Could the universe have come into being by chance? Could the world have created itself? No. Everything made has a maker.
It takes a man weeks of patient apprenticeship to learn to assemble a watch. You could shake the parts of a watch in a can for a million years and they would never fall into place as a watch.
Could then the parts of a flower or a tree come together into one perfect whole by blind chance?
Who made it?
When you see a watch you ask, what kind is it? Who made it?
And when you see an animal, a tree, a flower, a bird, a man, or a world you should ask the same question, who made it?
There is only one right answer to the origin of the universe, the world, and all that is in them. God made them.
The things about us cry out, “God created!"
Only life produces life. The things that are made declare a Maker-God – The Creator God.
Men Worship many Gods
There are many gods which men worship. Some people worship the heavenly bodies - the sun, the moon, and the stars. Others worship the forces of nature, such as fire, water and thunder.
Still others worship animals, and some worship great men.
The Creator God
But there is one God who is greater than all of these gods.
He is brighter than the sun and the stars, and wiser than the world’s greatest men. He is greater than all of these, because He made them all. He is the true God, the Creator, the Maker of heaven and earth.
The Creator God is the Life from which all life comes, the Power from which all power comes. He is Goodness, from which all law and morality come. He is the source of love and wisdom. He is a wonderful Father to us, His created beings.
This great God existed before all else. He is called the Ancient of Days, because He never had a beginning and never will have an ending (Daniel 7:9)
Everything designed has a designer
Everything designed has a designer. The design in our world is another evidence for believing in the Creator God.
Two men, a believer and a doubter, stood beside their houses arguing about the existence of God. Finally the irritated doubter demanded: "Why do you believe in God? You cannot see Him.”
The believer replied, "Why do I believe that a water buffalo trampled my garden last night? Look! It is because I see his footprints in the ground. And so I see the evidence of God everywhere in the universe."
In the design of the world, we see God’s footprints in the ground. The grassy hills, the sky, the animals, the trees, man - these wonders all around us declare, “God created, God designed."
Eyes
Think of some real wonders of nature - your own eyes. The nearest thing like them which man has made is the camera.
Most cameras can be set to focus on near or distant objects, and can be adjusted to let in the right amount of light. But the human eye does all this automatically over a much greater range of vision.
Does anyone think the fine lenses of a camera could have been made, and precision ground by mere chance?
Then what about the marvelous living lenses of your eye, that actually change their shape as you look at different objects? If very brilliant men invented the camera did not Someone much wiser invent the eye?
Other Body Parts
There are other wonders of your body: ears that can hear, a tongue that can taste, a nose that can smell, a brain that can think. Could the parts of our body come together by chance? No! The design of the human body is evidence that an all powerful Creator God designed it.
Can the Blind come together?
Let us suppose a case to demonstrate this. One hundred blind men set out without guides from a hundred different cities and villages of Malaya. They are told to meet in Singapore, fall in line, and march down Nicoll Highway in perfect rank and file like a well-drilled regiment of soldiers. You say this is impossible for one hundred blind men to find their way to Singapore without a guide and then to find each other and fall into perfect marching order. This just could not happen by chance.
Even so, how much chance is there of the blind parts of the body -
a stomach, a brain, a heart, a nose, two eyes, two ears, two hands, two arms, a liver etc all coming together in the correct order and all beginning to function at the same time? Impossible!
The wonders of the human body declare, God designed.
The Sky
The design in our world speaks to us of a Designer. Look at the sky overhead. At evening when the sun sinks in the west watch this blazing ball set the clouds on fire. God, the incomparable Artist, paints upon the canvas of the heavens a scene of matchless splendour. Who can behold the beauty of a sunset and say there is no God?
The Stars
Dusk comes. The Artist wipes the colours from the canvas. One by one the stars appear like beautiful gems in the sky. Have you ever tried to count them? Astronomers tell us that on a clear night about 2000 stars can be seen with the naked eye. With the help of the telescope, 1,000,000,000 stars can be photographed. And still there are countless more.
More amazing still, these heavenly bodies are not motionless
objects suspended in space; they are all travelling at tremendous speeds in fixed orbits. The moon revolves around the earth. The earth and the planets revolve around the sun. The sun is travelling through space at about 12 miles per second. And our sun is only one of billions of stars which make up the swirling galaxy, or island universe, which we call the Milky Way. Our galaxy, with billions of others, is rotating at high speed around a center in the heavens. Friend, who else but the all powerful God could design the complicated workings of this vast universe? Who other than the Creator Himself could guide the numberless stars in such minute precision that there is no danger of accident or collision?
How Small are we?
We think it is marvelous when man tosses into orbit a few space rockets weighing a ton or so. But our earth weighs 6,600,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons. And the sun is so big it could hold 1,000,000 earths. How small are we then! And how great is God!
Does this Great God have time to notice us?
Does this mighty God have time to notice us? Listen to His message to us through an ancient writing: “For thus says the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place
and also with him who is of a contrite and humble spirit." (Isaiah 57:15)
He wants a Personal Relationship with us
Wonders of wonders, the God who made the universe and all things in it comes into a personal relationship with man. He dwells with anyone who has a humble heart. He has instructed us to call Him our Father. He has told us that He knows all about us even to the number of hairs on our head. He knows our thoughts, our sorrows and our joys. He hears us when we cry to Him for help. He wants to take our hand in His and lead us through life. Deep within every human heart is a longing for God.
