The Bible and Confidence

Righteousness produces peace and quiet confidence.
"The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever." Isaiah 32:17-18, NIV

Intimidation must be met with confidence and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
"For the Holy Spirit, God's gift, does not want you to be afraid of people, but to be wise and strong, and to love them and enjoy being with them." II Timothy 1:7, TLB

Careful planning should include submission to God.
"Look here, you people who say, 'Today or tomorrow we are going to such and such a town, stay there a year, and open up a profitable business.' How do you know what is going to happen tomorrow? For the length of your lives is as uncertain as the morning fog—now you see it; soon it is gone. What you ought to say is, 'If the Lord wants us to, we shall live and do this or that.' Otherwise you will be bragging about your own plans, and such self-confidence never pleases God." James 4:13-16, TLB

God has power over the elements of nature.
"Then He rebuked the wind and said to the sea, 'Quiet down! And the wind fell, and there was a great calm! And He asked them, 'Why were you so fearful? Don't you even yet have confidence in Me?' And they were filled with awe and said among themselves, 'Who is this man, that even the winds and seas obey Him?'" Mark 4:39-41, TLB5

Meaning of Confidence

Confidence is generally described as a state of being certain either that a hypothesis or prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective. Self-confidence is having confidence in oneself. Arrogance or hubris in this comparison, is having unmerited confidence--believing something or someone is capable or correct when they are not. Overconfidence or presumptuousness is excessive belief, in someone or something, succeeding, without any regard for failure. Scientifically, a situation can only be judged after the aim has been achieved or not. Confidence can be a self-fulfilling prophecy as those without it may fail or not try because they lack it and those with it may succeed because they have it rather than because of an innate ability.7
