Inspirational Quotes from Famous People

I believe the first test of a truly great man is his humility. I do not mean by humility, doubt of his own powers. But really great men have a curious feeling that the greatness is not in them, but through them. And they see something divine in every other man.
--John Ruskin

Humility is the only true wisdom by which we prepare our minds for all the possible changes of life.

The Bible and Humility

If you will humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, in His good time He will lift you up." I Peter 5:5-6, TLB

Pride can cut us off from God and from others.
"I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home forgiven! For the proud shall be humbled, but the humble shall be honored." Luke 18:14, TLB

Childlike humility is valued by heaven.
"Therefore anyone who humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven." Matthew 18:4, TLB

Definition of Humility

The quality or condition of being humble.4

Definition of Humble

1. Marked by meekness or modesty in behavior, attitude, or spirit; not arrogant or prideful.
2. Showing deferential or submissive respect: a humble apology.
3. Low in rank, quality, or station; unpretentious or lowly: a humble cottage.4

Meaning of Humility

Humility is defined as, "A quality by which a person considering his own defects has a humble opinion of himself and willingly submits himself to God and to others for God's sake."

Humility is said to be the foundation of the spiritual edifice and inferior only to faith. However, humility is considered the first virtue inasmuch as it removes the obstacles to faith. It removes pride and makes a man subject to and a fit recipient of grace; according to the words of St. James, "God resisteth the proud, and giveth his grace to the humble" (James 4:6).

As illustrated in the person of Moses, who leads the nation of Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt and to the “Promised Land”, humility is a sign of Godly strength and purpose, not weakness. Of this great leader, the Bible states, “(For Moses was a man exceeding meek above all men that dwelt upon earth)" (Numbers 12:3, Douay-Rheims Bible).7
