Dignity and the Bible

“This is the book of the genealogy of Adam, in the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.  He created them male and female and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created.” Genesis 5:1,2

“For He has not put the world to come, of  which we speak, in subjection to angels.  But one testified in a certain place, saying: ‘“What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him?  You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands.  You have put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him, But now we do not yet see all things put under him.” Hebrews 2:5-8

“ Man is heaven’s masterpiece.”  Francis Quarles

‘All these His wondrous works, but chiefly man.’  John Milton

MAN’S IDENTITY CRISES

Satan has brought so much confusion as to our identity.  He will tell you anything but the truth.  His vast array of lies would cause you to waver between being nature’s accident, an offspring of an ape, or a god in your own right.  The scripture call us to sober reality that comes by a God given ability to believe His Word.

“For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.”  Romans 12:3

THE LEAVEN OF EVOLUTION

*It robs us of a definite and glorious beginning.

*It questions God’s ability to create instantaneously.

*Negates or at least complicates the need for atonement.

GENERATION (creation) OF MAN

We are the product of the intimate in-breathing of God upon us.  We are God’s offspring, empowered and commissioned.   Above all earthly creatures we are blessed with superior spiritual faculties and intellect.  The upright posture among many other characteristics is distinctly ours.  Fellowship with God and dominion over creation is our calling.

DEGENERATION (fall) OF MAN

According to the theory of evolution man is ‘falling upward,’ or becoming further developed with time.  This is contrary to the testimony of scripture.  We are a fallen and marred race.  Our dominion is contested and partial.

MISCONCEPTIONS OF OUR HUMAN STATE:

1. Pelagian Concept:  Adam’s sin effected only Him,  but provides a bad example for us.  We are born free from sin,  therefore  are morally and spiritual well free to choose our course of life.

2. Semi Pelagian Concept:  Adam’s sin though not imputed to us, yet deprived us of original righteousness.  We therefore need divine assistance to attain our perfected state.  It is a cooperative effort between God and man initiated by the human will.

The scriptures teach very clearly that Adam’s sin was imputed to his posterity.  Man is unable to do anything to save himself. Romans 5:15-20

REGENERATION (salvation) OF MAN

Only through the Grace of Jesus Christ can our significance be known.  Thousands of species of God’s original creation have been allowed to go into extinction.  In spite of all odds, God has preserved the human race.  Christ died not for angels, or baby whales, but for the likes of you and I.  Our calling in Him is without equal, made manifest in His glorious ascension to the throne of heaven.  We are dignified in Him and shall soon be dignified with Him.

PERSONAL AND SOCIAL ADJUSTMENTS

Wherever the Gospel is preached and received, it lifts the social standing of the poor, the in firmed, all age groups and genders.  Every individual has tremendous value and potential in the Body of Christ.  May we think soberly about ourselves and every person we come in contact with.  But especially let us be in awe of the redeemed of the Lord.2
