Bible Quotes

And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
(Ruth 1:8,9)

For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
(Proverbs 3:12)

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
(Proverbs 22:6,15)

Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
(Proverbs 23:13,14)

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.
(Proverbs 27:11)

The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.
(Proverbs 29:15,17)

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
(Proverbs 31:28)

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.
(Isaiah 49:15)

Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter.
(Ezekiel 16:44)

He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
(Matthew 10:37)

If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
(Luke 11:11-13)

And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
(Ephesians 6:4)

Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
(Colossians 3:21)

One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 12: Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
(1 Timothy 3:4,5,12)

But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
(1 Timothy 5:8)

That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
(Titus 2:4)

If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
(Hebrews 12:7)

Parents and the Bible

Honoring parents is one of God's commandments. "Honor your father and mother, that you may have a long, good life in the land the Lord your God will give you." Exodus 20:12, TLB.

If parents reject us, God never will. "For if my father and mother should abandon me, You would welcome and comfort me." Psalm 27:10, TLB.

The children of honest parents are blessed. "It is a wonderful heritage to have an honest father." Proverbs 20:7, TLB.

What moral conditions will be characteristic of society in the last days? "But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them." II Timothy 3:1-5, NIV.

What does God expect from parents as they raise children? Parents must be godly examples in words and actions. “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7, NIV

God expects parents to be patient. “Fathers, don't scold your children so much that they become discouraged and quit trying.” Colossians 3:21, TLB.

What does God expect of a mother? “When she speaks, her words are wise, and kindness is the rule for everything she says.” Proverbs 31:26, TLB.

Discipline is an expression of parental love. “If you refuse to discipline your son, it proves you don't love him; for if you love him, you will be prompt to punish him.” Proverbs 13:24, TLB.

Children often bear the consequences of their parents' sins. “I, Jehovah, show this steadfast love to many thousands by forgiving their sins; or else I refuse to clear the guilty, and require that a father's sins be punished in the sons and grandsons, and even later generations.” Exodus 34:7, TLB.

What response does God expect from children? It's in the Bible, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Ephesians 6:1, NIV5

Parents

A parent is a mother or father; one who sires or gives birth to and/or nurtures and raises an offspring. The different roles of parents vary throughout the tree of life, and are especially complex in human culture.

A mother is always the biological or social female parent of a child or offspring. The maternal bond describes the feelings the mother has for her (or another's) child. In the case of a mammal such as a human, the mother gestates her child (called first an embryo, then a fetus) in the uterus from conception or implantation until the fetus is sufficiently well-developed to be born. The mother then goes into labour and gives birth. Once the child is born, the mother produces milk to feed the child. In most situations, due to the fact that the mother was the one to carry the offspring, she is closer to the child. The mother is also usually the one to stay home and care for the child. However, if the mother is working and the father stays home to care for the child, the child would have more time to bond with the father regardless of the fact that the mother was the one pregnant with the child.

Like mothers, fathers may be categorised according to their biological, social or legal relationship with the child. Historically, the biological relationship paternity has been determinative of fatherhood. However, proof of paternity has been intrinsically problematic and so social rules often determined who would be regarded as a father e.g. the husband of the mother.8
