Bible Quotes
Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you, when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me. ...
(Proverbs 1:24-33) ESV

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. ...
(Romans 13:1-14) ESV

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
(1 Corinthians 6:19-20) ESV

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
(Galatians 6:7-9) ESV

Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, ...
(Ephesians 5:21-33) ESV

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, ...
(Ephesians 6:1-24) ESV

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
(Colossians 3:20) ESV

So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
(James 4:17) ESV1

Defiance and the Bible

From God's perspective, He must be amazed at the choices we make because of our sin nature. This was the case with the Jews when Moses led them out bondage. The Jews soon after being led into the wilderness decided to rebel with the express purpose of returning to their bondage in Egypt. Nehemiah 9:17 says, "...and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage..." This is the way the sin nature in all of us desires to act. Our sin nature desires to rebel against God and return to the bondage of sin. Our defiant behavior's purpose is to return to the bondage of sin.

Other defiant occurrences in the Bible:

Acts 17:7 Jason has received them into his house; and they all set Caesar's authority at defiance, declaring that there is another Emperor-- one called Jesus." (WEY)

Romans 16:17 But I beseech you, brethren, to keep a watch on those who are causing the divisions among you, and are leading others into sin, in defiance of the instruction which you have received; and habitually to shun them. (WEY)

2 Corinthians 10:5 For we overthrow arrogant 'reckonings,' and every stronghold that towers high in defiance of the knowledge of God, and we carry off every thought as if into slavery--into subjection to Christ; (WEY)

2 Timothy 3:5 and will keep up a make-believe of piety and yet live in defiance of its power. Turn away from people of this sort. (WEY)

Hebrews 10:28 Any one who bids defiance to the Law of Moses is put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. (WEY)

James 3:14 But if in your hearts you have bitter feelings of envy and rivalry, do not speak boastfully and falsely, in defiance of the truth. (WEY)

Genesis 25:18 They lived from Havilah to Shur that is before Egypt, as you go toward Assyria. He lived opposite all his relatives. (See NAS)

1 Samuel 17:23 As he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words: and David heard them. (See NIV)

Job 15:25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God, and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty; (See RSV)2,3
