Bible Quotes
So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them.
(Matthew 4:24) ESV

That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick.
(Matthew 8:16) ESV

And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.” And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. ...
(Matthew 17:14-20) ESV

They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. ...
(Mark 5:1-43) ESV

And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. ...
(Mark 9:17-22) ESV

And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
(Mark 9:25) ESV

And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,
(Luke 9:1) ESV

While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
(Luke 9:42) ESV1

Inspirational Quotes from Famous People

Because of my Marxism, I was not into myths or miracles, whether it was the virgin birth, the physical resurrection or casting out demons from an epileptic.
--Lionel Blue – British Clergyman Born 1930

Epilepsy is one of the most often misdiagnosed,
mistreated, or under-treated conditions affecting seniors,”
--James Firman quotes

The goal is to understand the mechanisms of epilepsy, which are not known, and create better treatments for this terrible disorder.
--Brian Ross quotes

Increasingly, clinicians treating people with epilepsy ask about current depression, but they may not ask about past suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts. Our results may alert clinicians to the need to ask this question and offer any needed counseling to prevent [later] suicide.
--Dale C. Hesdorffer quotes

For reasons that are not understood, depression both increases the risk for developing epilepsy and is also common among people with epilepsy who experience many seizures.
--Dale C. Hesdorffer quotes

But the connection between epilepsy and psychiatric disorders involves more than overlapping symptoms and mistaken diagnoses. More than a quarter of people with epilepsy have psychological symptoms that may require treatment, and up to 10 percent of patients in psychiatric hospitals have epilepsy.
--Michael Miller quotes

There has got to be a way for people who deal with life-long mental illnesses to be treated like other members of society – the way those who are diagnosed with diabetes or cancer or epilepsy are. I'll fight until the end for the 20% of Americans who have mental illnesses, because mine nearly destroyed my life.

Epilepsy and the Bible

Evidence of Epilepsy in the Bible

In the scripture of Mark 9:17-21 we read, "And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb (evil) spirit. And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him, and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away. And I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. He (Jesus) answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him unto me. And they brought him unto him. And when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground and wallowed foaming. And he (Jesus) asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child."

There are many good reasons for associating the above scripture with an example of epilepsy in the Bible. We learn that the afflicted individual falls to the ground, becomes rigid, thrashes about, foams at the mouth and chews. All of these facts are revealed in the passage. These are the very same signs that are seen when an epileptic has seizures or what is called tonic clonic convulsions, formerly known as grand mal convulsions. Therefore, it is perfectly logical to declare that the passage of Mark 9:17-21 is sure evidence of epilepsy in the Bible.

Epilepsy and Demonic Possession

Because Mark 9:17-21 speaks of demonic possession in connection with the description of convulsions, we know that epilepsy in the Bible reveals some truths that are never accepted by doctors. Epileptic seizures can result from physical injury, taking medications, high fevers, and the use of illegal drugs. Convulsions can also occur and recur for no apparent reason--at least no apparent medical reason. Sometimes there is a spiritual reason for both mental and physical sickness and abnormalities. This truth is plainly revealed in the careful reading and study of the word of God on mental and physical sickness and disease.

The father in our biblical example of epilepsy in the Bible did not give up hope for his son's healing. He could find no help in the doctors of those days. He did not receive help at first when he turned to men of God, but he would not stop. He sought Jesus and witnessed the complete liberation from the evil spirit who was behind epileptic seizures suffered by his son (Mark 9:22-27). Yes, sometimes there is a connection between epilepsy and demonic possession according the Scriptures that reveal epilepsy in the Bible.2
