For the needy
shall not always be forgotten: the
expectation of the poor shall not
perish for ever.
(Psalm 9:18)
The wicked in his
pride doth persecute the poor: let
them be taken in the devices that
they have imagined.
(Psalm 10:2)
Thou hast seen it; for
thou beholdest mischief and spite,
to requite it with thy hand: the
poor committeth himself unto thee;
thou art the helper of the
fatherless.
(Psalm 10:14)
For the
oppression of the poor, for the
sighing of the needy, now will I
arise, saith the LORD; I will set
him in safety from him that
puffeth at him.
(Psalm 12:5)
Ye have shamed
the counsel of the poor, because
the LORD is his refuge.
(Psalm 14:6)
He sitteth in the
lurking places of the villages: in
the secret places doth he murder
the innocent: his eyes are privily
set against the poor. He lieth in wait
secretly as a lion in his den: he
lieth in wait to catch the poor:
he doth catch the poor, when he
draweth him into his net. He croucheth, and
humbleth himself, that the poor
may fall by his strong ones.
(Psalm 10:8-10)
The wicked have
drawn out the sword, and have bent
their bow, to cast down the poor
and needy, and to slay such as be
of upright conversation. A little that a
righteous man hath is better than
the riches of many wicked. The wicked borroweth,
and payeth not again: but the
righteous sheweth mercy, and
giveth. He is ever merciful,
and lendeth; and his seed is
blessed.
(Psalm 37:14,16,21,26)
He will regard
the prayer of the destitute, and
not despise their prayer.
(Psalm 102:17)
For he satisfieth
the longing soul, and filleth the
hungry soul with goodness.
(Psalm 107:9)
Because that he
remembered not to shew mercy, but
persecuted the poor and needy man,
that he might even slay the broken
in heart. For he shall
stand at the right hand of the
poor, to save him from those that
condemn his soul.
(Psalm 109:16,31)
Unto the upright
there ariseth light in the
darkness: he is gracious, and full
of compassion, and righteous. A good man sheweth
favour, and lendeth: he will guide
his affairs with discretion. He hath dispersed, he
hath given to the poor; his
righteousness endureth for ever;
his horn shall be exalted with
honour.
(Psalm 112:4,5,9)
Happy is he that
hath the God of Jacob for his
help, whose hope is in the LORD
his God: Which made heaven, and
earth, the sea, and all that
therein is: which keepeth truth
for ever: Which executeth judgment
for the oppressed: which giveth
food to the hungry. The LORD
looseth the prisoners:
(Psalm 146:5,7)
Whoso stoppeth
his ears at the cry of the poor,
he also shall cry himself, but
shall not be heard.
(Proverbs 21:13)
The rich and poor
meet together: the LORD is the
maker of them all. The rich ruleth over the
poor, and the borrower is servant
to the lender. He that hath a bountiful
eye shall be blessed; for he
giveth of his bread to the poor. Rob not the poor,
because he is poor: neither
oppress the afflicted in the gate: For the LORD will plead
their cause, and spoil the soul of
those that spoiled them.
(Proverbs 22:2,7,9,22,23)
For the drunkard
and the glutton shall come to
poverty: and drowsiness shall
clothe a man with rags.
(Proverbs 23:21)
A poor man that
oppresseth the poor is like a
sweeping rain which leaveth no
food. Better is the poor that
walketh in his uprightness, than
he that is perverse in his ways,
though he be rich. He that by usury and
unjust gain increaseth his
substance, he shall gather it for
him that will pity the poor. The rich man is wise in
his own conceit; but the poor that
hath understanding searcheth him
out. As a roaring lion, and
a ranging bear; so is a wicked
ruler over the poor people. He that tilleth his
land shall have plenty of bread:
but he that followeth after vain
persons shall have poverty enough. He that giveth unto the
poor shall not lack: but he that
hideth his eyes shall have many a
curse.
(Proverbs 28:3,6,8,11,15,19,27)
The righteous
considereth the cause of the poor:
but the wicked regardeth not to
know it.
(Proverbs 29:7)
The poor and the
deceitful man meet together: the
LORD lighteneth both their eyes. The king that
faithfully judgeth the poor, his
throne shall be established for
ever.
(Proverbs 29:13,14)
There is a
generation, whose teeth are as
swords, and their jaw teeth as
knives, to devour the poor from
off the earth, and the needy from
among men.
(Proverbs 30:14)
Open thy mouth,
judge righteously, and plead the
cause of the poor and needy. She stretcheth out her
hand to the poor; yea, she
reacheth forth her hands to the
needy.
(Proverbs 31:9,20)
Better is an
handful with quietness, than both
the hands full with travail and
vexation of spirit. Better is a poor and a
wise child than an old and foolish
king, who will no more be
admonished.
(Ecclesiastes 4:6,13)
If thou seest the
oppression of the poor, and
violent perverting of judgment and
justice in a province, marvel not
at the matter: for he that is
higher than the highest regardeth;
and there be higher than they.
(Ecclesiastes 5:8)
For what hath the wise
more than the fool? what hath the
poor, that knoweth to walk before
the living?
(Ecclesiastes 6:8)
Now there was found in
it a poor wise man, and he by his
wisdom delivered the city; yet no
man remembered that same poor man. Then said I, Wisdom is
better than strength: nevertheless
the poor man's wisdom is despised,
and his words are not heard.
(Ecclesiastes 9:15,16)
For thou hast been a
strength to the poor, a strength
to the needy in his distress, a
refuge from the storm, a shadow
from the heat, when the blast of
the terrible ones is as a storm
against the wall.
(Isaiah 25:4)
And he lifted up his
eyes on his disciples, and said,
Blessed be ye poor: for yours is
the kingdom of God. But love ye your
enemies, and do good, and lend,
hoping for nothing again; and your
reward shall be great, and ye
shall be the children of the
Highest: for he is kind unto the
unthankful and to the evil.
(Luke 6:20,35)
But rather give alms of
such things as ye have; and,
behold, all things are clean unto
you.
(Luke 11:41)
Sell that ye have, and
give alms; provide yourselves bags
which wax not old, a treasure in
the heavens that faileth not,
where no thief approacheth,
neither moth corrupteth.
(Luke 12:33)
Behold, the hire of the
labourers who have reaped down
your fields, which is of you kept
back by fraud, crieth: and the
cries of them which have reaped
are entered into the ears of the
Lord of sabaoth.
(James 5:4)
