  Song Page for Psalm 28

Lyrics

1 Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.
2 Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto thee, when I lift up my hands toward thy holy oracle.
3 Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts.
4 Give them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours: give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert.
5 Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up.
6 Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.
7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.
8 The LORD is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed.
9 Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever.1

Inscription and Authorship

A Psalm of David. This psalm, Aben Ezra says, David either composed himself, or one of the singers for him; the former seems most likely; and it might be made by him when he was persecuted by Saul, or when delivered from him; or at least when he had faith and hope that he should be delivered: the psalm consists of two parts, petitions and thanksgivings.2

Subject

Psalm 28 was apparently created when the psalmist was under strong temptation to be drawn away with the wicked. The psalm has two contrasting divisions. The change from the cry for deliverance from trouble of vs. 1-5, to the expression of gratitude for relief in vs. 6-9, is made with dramatic abruptness.2

Division

The former part of this psalm is the prayer of a saint militan and now in distress (v. 1-3), to which is added the doom of God's implacable enemies (v. 4, 5).
The latter part of the psalm is the thanksgiving of a saint triumphant, and delivered out of his distresses (v. 6-8), to which is added a prophetical prayer for all God's faithful loyal subjects (v. 9).4
